Thai New West is more than a restaurant, it is the essence of the combined experiences and lifestyles of its founders. Purity, freshness, good health and celebration form the core of our dining concept.
When growing up Vara would accompany her mother to buy fresh produce and meats from the morning markets in her hometown, Bangkok. The smells, sounds, tastes, the hustle and bustle intrigued her! At home she would assist her mother in the kitchen where she learned the intricate tastes, flavours and the art of balancing which qualifies a well cooked thai meal. In 1992, Vara left Thailand to study for her Masters degree at Johnson & Wales University, Providence, USA. She then returned to Bangkok to work fo several years as Dean at the Dusit Thani College of Hotel Management before embarking on a delicious culinary journey in Vancouver.
Teg honed his culinary and hospitality skills from École Hôtelière César Ritz in Switzerland in 1992 after which he went on to earn his Master’s degree from Johnson & Wales University, Providence, USA. The next 15 years were spent serving distinguished clientele at some of the finest hotels in the world including the Four Seasons, Hay Adams & the Capital Hilton in Washington DC, Metropolitan Hotel Vancouver and Intercontinental Hotels, Sydney, Australia.
Milan grew up in Thai New West and our loyal guests fondly remember her as a child when we first opened in 2012. She now attends SFU and has developed a distinguished palate and offers a useful insight into the tastes, habits and preferences of our younger guests. She is a New West Secondary School Grad and has been instrumental in building community relationships such as our annual participation in support of NWSS Dry Grad.
